Peter A. McShane currently serves as the sole criminal judge in the courthouse, responsibilities include all pre-trials, arraignments and day-to-day assignments in Derby. He received his B.A. from St. Michaels College and his JD from Boston University School of Law. He clerked for Hon. John J. Daly at the State of Connecticut Appellate Court and began his career with the State’s Attorney Office at G.A.10 in New London in 1989.The SMART program, which addresses issues related to distracted driving and underage drinking, was developed by McShane and MADD while he was at GA 10. This program is now utilized in all the GA courts across the state and has since been adopted in 24 states. In 1994 McShane was promoted to Assistant State’s Attorney where he spent the next 13 years trying over 50 felony trials including murder, manslaughter, narcotics, arson and assault trials to verdict. In 2011, he was appointed State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Middlesex, where he served as the head of law enforcement for criminal matters serving the fifteen towns in Middlesex County. As State’s Attorney, McShane supervised Juvenile, GA 9 and Part A court, 8 attorneys, 4 investigators , staff and law enforcement in the county. In total, he has tried over 15 murder trials to verdict and argued over 30 cases before the State’s Supreme and Appellate Courts.
